GATE-linked stipend & scholarship guide for 2027
A valid GATE 2027 score unlocks three distinct financial tracks: the AICTE PG stipend at Rs 12,400 per month for up to 24 months during M.Tech at any IIT / NIT / IIIT / GFTI; an institute-level PhD fellowship at Rs 37,000 per month (JRF, years 1-2) escalating to Rs 42,000 (SRF, years 3-5) plus HRA and a Rs 20,000 yearly contingency; and PSU recruitment via the GATE score with a starting CTC of Rs 8 LPA to Rs 16 LPA. Full breakdown below.
How much is the AICTE PG stipend and who gets it?
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) funds a stipend for GATE-qualified candidates admitted to full-time M.Tech / M.E. / M.S. (by research) programmes at AICTE-approved institutions.
- Amount: ₹12,400 / month for up to 24 months (2 years of M.Tech).
- Eligibility: Valid GATE score (any qualifying paper) + admission to a regular full-time M.Tech / M.E. at IIT / NIT / IIIT / GFTI / select AICTE-approved private institutes.
- How: The institute auto-enrols you. No separate application needed - but you must maintain CGPA ≥ 6.0 and attendance ≥ 75% each semester to keep receiving it.
The Rs 12,400 stipend starts with a GATE-qualifying score
Clear the qualifying cutoff for your paper (roughly 25-29 raw marks for the high-volume engineering papers), land an M.Tech seat, and the AICTE PG stipend is automatic. Free, full-length mocks below.

- Inspire (DST): For PG / PhD in science streams - ₹80,000 / year for select GATE qualifiers entering science PG.
- UGC / DAE / DRDO fellowships: For PhD admissions at central research labs. GATE score helps shortlist; each lab has its own selection process.
- State government schemes: Several states (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala) offer GATE prep financial support for SC / ST / OBC candidates. Check your state's higher-education department.
- Private trust scholarships: Tata Trusts, Aditya Birla Scholarship Programme, JN Tata Endowment - open to all postgraduates, GATE-qualified candidates with strong academic record have a fair shot.
Institute-level fellowships at IITs and IISc
Beyond the AICTE PG stipend (which covers M.Tech) and the JRF / SRF fellowship structure (which covers PhD), several IITs run their own top-up schemes for GATE-qualified scholars - typically funded out of institute endowments or corporate-sponsored chairs. These do not replace the AICTE / MHRD stipend; they stack on top.
| Institute | Scheme | Indicative top-up |
|---|---|---|
| IIT Bombay | Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship (for PhD finishers); Industrial chair top-ups for M.Tech research | Rs 5,000 - Rs 15,000 / month |
| IIT Madras | Half-Time Teaching Assistantship for M.Tech; Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) for PhD | Rs 70,000 - Rs 80,000 / month (PMRF) |
| IIT Delhi | Institute Research Assistantship; sponsored-research project stipends | Rs 5,000 - Rs 12,000 / month top-up |
| IISc Bangalore | Integrated PhD fellowship; Centre / Department-level project stipends | Stipend at JRF / SRF rate + HRA + contingency |
| IIT Kanpur / Kharagpur / Roorkee / Guwahati | Half-Time Teaching Assistantship; departmental research grants | Rs 5,000 - Rs 10,000 / month top-up |
The PMRF (Prime Minister's Research Fellowship) deserves a special mention - it is open to direct-PhD candidates with a strong GATE / B.Tech CGPA and pays Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 per month for the first two years rising to Rs 80,000 to Rs 90,000 in years three to five, plus a research grant of Rs 2 lakh per year. PMRF eligibility requires either (a) a top-tier B.Tech CGPA at a CFTI plus a direct-PhD admission offer, or (b) an M.Tech at a CFTI plus a strong GATE scorecard.
PSU recruitment as the alternative to the stipend route
Not every GATE-qualified candidate wants to spend two more years on an M.Tech. The PSU recruitment route is the other big GATE outcome and the financial maths works out very differently. A typical PSU engineering trainee joins on a Pay Level 10 - 11 grade with starting CTC Rs 8 LPA to Rs 16 LPA, plus government benefits (HRA, leave travel concession, pension, medical for self and parents, subsidised housing in PSU townships).
| PSU | Designation | Indicative starting CTC |
|---|---|---|
| IOCL | Officer Trainee (Grade A) | Rs 15-17 LPA |
| ONGC | Assistant Executive Engineer (E1) | Rs 14-16 LPA |
| GAIL | Executive Trainee | Rs 13-15 LPA |
| NTPC | Executive Trainee | Rs 12-14 LPA |
| Power Grid | Engineer Trainee (E2A) | Rs 11-13 LPA |
| BHEL | Engineer Trainee | Rs 10-12 LPA |
| Coal India | Management Trainee | Rs 10-12 LPA |
Indicative numbers; actual CTC varies by year, posting location and dearness allowance revision. Consult the live PSU notification for the cycle you are applying in.
Foreign M.Tech routes that accept GATE
A subset of foreign universities accept the GATE scorecard as an alternative or supplement to the GRE for engineering Master's admissions. This is not a uniform global recognition; it varies by university, by programme and by year. The list below is indicative; verify with each university's admissions office before relying on a GATE-only application.
- Germany:Technical University of Munich (TUM) and RWTH Aachen accept a strong GATE score for select engineering Master's programmes, particularly in Computer Science, Robotics and Electrical Engineering. TUM tuition is largely zero (only a semester contribution) - the financial outcome is very competitive.
- Singapore: National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) accept GATE in place of GRE for some Master of Engineering programmes; scholarship support available for top scorers.
- Australia:Several Group of Eight universities (Monash, RMIT) consider GATE for engineering Master's applications and tuition scholarships.
- UAE: Khalifa University and Masdar Institute (now part of Khalifa) accept GATE for engineering postgraduate admissions with full-tuition + stipend scholarships for high-scoring candidates.
Section 80E: tax deduction on education loans for M.Tech
Even with a stipend, many M.Tech candidates take a small education loan to cover the tuition and living-expense gap. Section 80E of the Income Tax Act allows the full interest paid on an education loan (from a notified financial institution or approved charitable institution) to be claimed as a deduction from taxable income for the year. Key terms:
- Eligible loan: Taken for higher education in India or abroad for self, spouse, children or a student of whom you are the legal guardian. M.Tech / M.Sc / PhD all qualify.
- Lender requirement: Loan must be from a scheduled bank, NBFC notified by Government, or an approved charitable institution. Family / friend loans do not qualify.
- What is deductible: Only the interest component - not the principal repayment.
- Duration of deduction: Up to 8 assessment years starting from the year you begin repayment, or until interest is fully paid, whichever comes earlier.
- No upper cap: Unlike Section 80C, there is no ceiling on the deduction amount. The full interest paid is deductible.
- Documentation: Keep the loan sanction letter, interest certificate from the lender (issued annually), and proof of payment for tax filing.
