GATE 2027 application: a step-by-step walkthrough
The GATE 2027 application portal opens in late August 2026 (typical URL pattern: gate2027.iitX.ac.in), with a regular deadline at end-September, a late-application window into mid-October at a Rs 500 extra fee, and a correction window in late October. Total time to fill the form yourself is about 45 minutes if your documents are ready - this page walks through every step, the exact document specs, the Rs 1,800 / Rs 900 fee structure, and the mistakes that disqualify candidates every cycle.
Where exactly do you apply for GATE 2027?
One portal, hosted by the GATE 2027 conducting institute (announced in July 2026). The URL typically follows the pattern gate2027.iitX.ac.in (e.g.gate2025.iitr.ac.infor GATE 2025). Bookmark the official link as soon as it's out - avoid third-party agents charging premium fees for filling a form you can complete in 45 minutes yourself.
Six-step flow
- Register:Click "Apply Online", enter your email + mobile (OTP), set a password. The system creates a GOAPS (GATE Online Application Processing System) ID - note it down; you'll need it for admit card, result, COAP / CCMT counselling.
- Choose your paper code(s): Pick from CS, ME, EE, EC, CE, ChE, IN, CY, MA, PH, XE, XL, XH, EY, etc. You can pick up to 2 papers from a pre-defined allowed-combinations list.
- Personal & academic details: Name (matching your degree certificate exactly), DOB, category, qualifying degree (B.Tech / M.Sc. / etc.), college, year of passing, current academic status.
- Choose 3 test cities:Rank them in order of preference. The conducting body tries to give your first choice but doesn't guarantee it. Once allotted (via admit card), you cannot change.
- Upload documents:Recent photo (JPG, 5-200 KB, white background, light formal), signature (JPG, 5-100 KB, black ink on white paper), category / PwD certificate if applicable (PDF, <300 KB), photo ID (Aadhaar / PAN / Passport, PDF, <300 KB).
- Pay the fee: ₹1,800 (General / OBC / EWS) or ₹900 (SC / ST / PwD / Female). UPI / net-banking / credit / debit. Per paper. Late fee: ₹500 extra. Save the payment receipt.

Once the test-city is allotted on the admit card you cannot change it - get the application out of the way and shift focus to a once-a-week IIT-pattern full-length mock.
Start a free mock →What goes wrong on application forms every cycle?
- Name mismatch: Your GATE form name must match your B.Tech degree exactly. Even an extra space breaks admit-card verification.
- Wrong paper code: Pick the paper code matching your degree branch (e.g. CS for CSE, ME for Mechanical, EE for Electrical). Wrong paper = wrong syllabus.
- Missing the correction window: Photo / signature mismatch can be fixed during the late-October correction window. After that, no changes allowed.
- Skipping test-city prefs: If you leave test city blank, the system assigns the centre with the most space - could be 4 hours from home.
- Wrong category certificate: OBC-NCL certificate must be dated within the validity window (typically 6 months before the exam). Expired certificate = General category at admission.
GOAPS portal walk-through, screen by screen
GOAPS (the GATE Online Application Processing System) is the single portal where everything from registration through admit card and result download happens. The flow opens with a one-time registration on the conducting institute's GATE microsite, after which the system mints a GOAPS enrolment ID. Save that enrolment ID and the password in two places - phone notes and a password manager; you will need them at the admit card window in January 2027, the result window in March, and the COAP / CCMT counselling registration in April.
- Landing page:Click "New User Register". Enter full name (matching your degree certificate exactly, character by character), email and mobile.
- OTP screen: Verify the OTPs on both email and mobile. The OTP expires in 10 minutes; if you miss it, click resend rather than restart the registration.
- Set password: Minimum 8 characters, one uppercase, one digit, one special character. The portal does not allow password reuse across cycles, so a 2025 candidate re-applying for 2027 needs a fresh password.
- Enrolment ID generated: The system creates a GOAPS ID in the format YYIIT followed by 7 digits. Note it immediately - lost IDs require a customer support ticket that takes 2 to 3 working days.
- Application form:Three tabs (Personal & Communication; Qualifying Degree; Paper & Test Centres). Each tab saves on next-click; you can return to incomplete tabs later. Total time end to end is 30 to 45 minutes with documents ready.
- Document upload: Photo, signature, category certificate (if applicable), PwD certificate (if applicable), photo ID. Each file is uploaded and previewed; reject and re-upload if the preview is misaligned.
- Fee payment:UPI or net-banking or credit / debit card. The portal hands off to a payment gateway (BillDesk / SBIePay). On success, the GOAPS dashboard updates to "Fee paid". On failure, wait 30 minutes for the gateway to reverse before retrying.
- Application submission: Final preview screen with every entered field. Re-verify every line, then click Submit. Once submitted, only the limited correction-window fields can be edited.
Photo and signature specifications
The single most common reason for application rejection at the document verification stage is a non-conforming photo or signature. The conducting body publishes a strict spec; uploading anything outside it triggers a rejection note during the correction window.
| Field | Photograph | Signature |
|---|---|---|
| File format | JPG / JPEG only | JPG / JPEG only |
| File size | 5 KB to 200 KB | 5 KB to 100 KB |
| Dimensions | 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm (240 x 320 px ideal) | 3.5 cm x 1.5 cm (280 x 120 px ideal) |
| Background | Plain white or off-white | White paper |
| Recency | Within last 3 months | Within last 3 months |
| Composition | Face front, both ears visible, neutral expression, no glasses with glare | Full signature in black ink, no initials, no printed name |
| Resolution | 200 dpi or higher | 200 dpi or higher |
The fee structure, in detail
| Category | Regular fee | Late fee |
|---|---|---|
| General / OBC / EWS (Indian) | Rs 1,800 | Rs 2,300 |
| SC / ST / PwD / Female (Indian) | Rs 900 | Rs 1,400 |
| Foreign candidate (per paper) | USD 50-100 | USD 70-120 |
| Two-paper applicant (per second paper) | Same as above | Same as above |
The late-fee window is a hard 2-week extension after the regular deadline; the extra Rs 500 is per paper, so a two-paper applicant who slips into late mode pays Rs 1,000 extra. After the late-fee window closes, the portal locks and no fresh applications are accepted. The correction window that opens a week later allows edits but does not allow new applications. Plan to submit at least 5 days before the regular deadline to allow for payment-gateway failures or document re-upload.
Document checklist before you start the form
Pre-gather everything below; the form fills out in 30 minutes if documents are ready, or 2 to 3 hours if you are also scanning certificates between tabs.
- Photo:JPG, 5-200 KB, 240x320 px, white background, < 3 months old.
- Signature: JPG, 5-100 KB, 280x120 px, black ink on white paper.
- Photo ID:Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, Driving License or Voter ID (PDF, < 300 KB). The same ID will be checked at the exam centre - use the strongest option.
- Qualifying degree proof: B.Tech / B.E. / B.Sc / M.Sc enrolment letter or degree certificate. 3rd-year students upload the bonafide certificate.
- Category certificate: OBC-NCL / SC / ST / EWS certificate from the prescribed authority, valid for the GATE 2027 cycle (PDF, < 300 KB).
- PwD certificate (if applicable): From a government-empanelled medical board (PDF, < 300 KB). Scribe-requirement declaration if you intend to use a scribe.
- Bank / UPI ready: The payment gateway accepts UPI (most reliable), net-banking, credit and debit cards. UPI has the lowest failure rate.
